Bisi Bele Bath is a classic Karnataka comfort food, a hearty and spicy one-pot rice and lentil dish that combines rice, lentils, vegetables, and a unique blend of aromatic spices. It’s a nutritious and flavorful meal loved across South India.
Ingredients
- 1 cup rice
- 1/2 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
- 2 cups mixed vegetables (carrots, beans, peas)
- 2 tbsp Bisi Bele Bath powder
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 tbsp ghee
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 2-3 curry leaves
- 2 green chilies
- Salt to taste
- Chopped coriander for garnish
Instructions
- Wash rice and toor dal together, then soak for 30 minutes
- Cook rice and dal in a pressure cooker with water
- In a large pan, heat ghee and add mustard seeds and curry leaves
- Add chopped onions and green chilies, sauté until golden
- Add chopped tomatoes and mixed vegetables
- Add Bisi Bele Bath powder and salt
- Mix in cooked rice and dal, add water if needed
- Simmer for 10-15 minutes until well combined
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves
Tips
Use fresh Bisi Bele Bath powder for the best flavor. You can adjust spice levels by changing the amount of powder. Serve hot with papad or raita for a complete meal.
